God this is absolutely fascinating and has inspired me not to bother with coconut oil or disgusting amino acid mixes. 😅
Shows how sensitive it all is.
Have you considered various intermittent fasting regimens? Plenty success stories where all else had stopped working… it normally breaks me through plateaus..
I did a whole lot of IF and even longer fasts years ago, but not recently. Maybe I'll try it if everything else fails for the rest of the summer... it's along time until winter ;)
It might work really well with your low protein protocol. The problem with fasting is that it works but then gets undone when people go back to unhelpful eating (like too much protein).
I’m just starting a 72 hour fast as I fell off the wagon during a family holiday 😫 and struggling to get back on. I do think nothing works like a 3 day fast..
Yea I haven't tried it since going on low-PUFA/low-protein. I really should try it soon, especially as this summer is an endless plateau on normal ex150 haha.
I think the big thing with replacing meat with amino acid powders is that meat has vitamins and minerals you need to utilize those things and regulate everything in your body. Meat actually has a decent amount of electrolytes, fwiw. Plus meat has carnitine and carnosine, which aren't "essential" but many NAA are nutrient-intensive to synthesize; you need many vitamins and minerals to do that just as you quit eating the best source of those in your diet. If you don't have enough carnitine you can't burn long chain fatty acids.
I think people underestimate the importance of micronutrients when it comes to weight loss; I would wager they're actually more important than macronutrients, and can even be a reason macronutrients *seem* so important in practice to some people, i.e. the reason a person can't burn a category of macronutrient for fuel without issues is because they're lacking in a micronutrient that would let them do that. For example, anyone who doesn't have enough riboflavin will have hell burning fat, or anyone with a thiamine deficiency will have a lot of trouble with high carb. (Other reasons are genetic, I think. You can have genetic issues handling any nutrient afaik; iirc there are at around 1500 recognized genetic "inborn errors of metabolism" of varying severity, with the minor or heterozygous ones sometimes only being symptomatic on certain diets or with certain nutrient deficiencies or in combination with other genetic variants.)
I admire how rigorous you are with these experiments! Thanks!
Yea there definitely seems to be something to beef besides just "protein" or "salt." Just shows how little we know..
FWIW I supplemented with a B vitamin complex for most of last year, even when I totally stalled out. So I would've had enough riboflavin and thiamine, I think.
I am recovering from my third go-around with Peating. This time I did it as clean as possible- did the Jay Feldman course, wore a CGM. I was willing to put on weight if it meant I would have a "fixed" metabolism down the road. By the time I had put on 25 lbs. (5 months in) it wasn't the weight that stopped me, it was the worsening anxiety and depression. That was with zero starches and zero dairy (the usual culprits). So I was just basically eating oxtail and lamb shanks for low methionine/glycine ratio, fruit, fruit juice, gelatin/collagen. No bueno. Back to the drawing board I'm what I call Carnivore Vegan : ) Beef, fat + salad, keeping the protein under 80 grams/day. I know that's not terribly low but I'm still losing weight and if/when it stalls I will probably drop the protein lower.
I think that the people who succeed on Peat are generally young and have a history of over exercising and over dieting. Of course their body is going to thank them for finally backing off from all the stressful craziness. I haven't come across anyone with serious weight problems benefiting from high carb of any sort.
Definitely generally cold. Hashimoto's. Spent decades doing the American metabolic roller coaster. All or nothing can get you into trouble but it can be a fruitful ( ; stealth weapon when used wisely. Some people thrive on fruit (Saladino- never seriously fat) but for others it is an edema, depression and weight gainer nightmare.
What's hilarious, in a dark way, is that my blood markers generally got worse during the 5 months of strict Peating. My TSH went from 4.4 to 6.7 and TPO, a marker of thyroid autoimmunity, from 67 to 106. I haven't retested yet.
I’m interested to see if carbohydrates are important part of the coconut oil experiment. Anabology, thermobilic, and even the Peaters seem to be “ok”. Also thermobolic was taking thyroid as well so even though coconut oil raised body Temp, could be a synergy beteeen the three
I've done the coconut oil experiment twice, now, and each time it's pretty noticeably affected my sleep. It's hard to get to sleep in the evenings, like you described.
My experiment just consist of eating 1-3 heaping spoonfuls of coconut oil per day, sometimes solid or sometimes liquid.
Interesting. Presumably you don't have a circadian rhythm disorder? Not sure what could be causing this in coconut oil. But it sure is a weird oil and I'll probably largely stay away from it.
Also during summer malaise, do you track body measurement stats like waist circumference and such? Like I’ve stayed the same weight on my default diet but my waist goes down and I get more muscular. A measuring tape around the belly and the zozofit app might be a good secondary metric to start tracking now.
I don't track waist circumference. It's traditionally been very imprecise for me, way more noisy than weight. I do a DEXA every month, so if I was losing fat but gaining muscle, I'd probably see it on there. Also go by pants fit, which has stayed pretty much the same.
I’ve had similar reflux issues with coconut oil. It’s possible the cocoa doesn’t help either but, the coconut oil by itself does it for me. Could it be the amount of manganese in the coconut oil? Or is that only in other parts of the coconut?
I frankly don't know what it is. I do get a little bit of reflux from dark chocolate and had some when I did the chocolate truffle, so the cocoa powder was my first suspect. But if pure coconut does it for you..? Maybe there's something to that as well?

Interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. Glad to see the "carnivore veganism" is working for you haha :)
Do you actually have a metabolism worthy of fixing in the Peat sense?

Ah, if you have Hashimoto's I think that's actual-real-thyroid stuff right? Not just the vague "metabolic malaise hypothyroid" Peaters quote.
What's hilarious, in a dark way, is that my blood markers generally got worse during the 5 months of strict Peating. My TSH went from 4.4 to 6.7 and TPO, a marker of thyroid autoimmunity, from 67 to 106. I haven't retested yet.
Haha don't tell Jay Feldman about it..

How do you get a CKM shipped to the usa? SiBio doesn’t ship to the usa and i dont know any other suppliers
Yea you have to know a guy. I wouldn't bother getting the Sibio, I didn't think it was robust. Lots of bugs, issues, lost accuracy within a week.
I’ve had similar reflux issues with coconut oil. It’s possible the cocoa doesn’t help either but, the coconut oil by itself does it for me. Could it be the amount of manganese in the coconut oil? Or is that only in other parts of the coconut?

Great read, as always. Interesting. I think I’ll stick to butter & beef dripping 😀
Man reaches out to Peter in Norfolk, learns that things are more complex than expected.
See this? This is my surprised face.
